Kristin Ghodsee, Professor of Russian and East European Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, was invited to give one of the Rutgers Distinguished Lectures in European History this past Spring (2018). Kristin selected this image of Valentina Tereshkova, a Soviet cosmonaut and the first woman in space, for the poster. Using GIMP, I added transparency to the image and cropped it to her head and helmet. I also removed the letters and numbers that originally appeared on her helmet, making room for the subtitle of the talk. I wanted to use a font that had a little bit of a 1908s cartoonish character to it, and chose the bright Soviet red of the background to offset the black and white photo. After a little editing to it clear that this was not a photo of Kristin, but rather of a Soviet cosmonaut, it was off to the presses.
11″ x 17″ poster created with GIMP and Scribus.
